Manchester United had to end another season without a trophy as Villarreal beat The Red Devils in an epic penalty shootout 11-10, to win the Europa League. That after quality-lacking 120 minutes ended 1-1.
Gerard Moreno stunned United when he put the Spanish club ahead in the 29th minute with his 30th goal of the season. But Edinson Cavani equalised soon in the 2nd-half.
The scoreline didn't change thereafter as the final went into a penalty shootout. All 20 outfield players converted their penalties in the longest shootout in a final of any Uefa competition. In an increasingly tense stadium, Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli blasted home his effort and then denied David de Gea to give Villarreal a first major trophy in their history.
While victory saw former Arsenal boss Unai Emery lift the Europa League for an unprecedented fourth time, Manchester United haven't won any trophy since 2017 and have lost 6 of their last 7 penalty shootouts in all competitions.
