'US negotiated with Taliban as it was losing the war': Ex-US envoy for Afghanistan

Days after stepping down as US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad in an interview to CBS News said United States chose negotiations as an alternative because it was losing the war to the Taliban.

Tolo News quoted Khalizad as saying that US military tried many times to strengthen its position on the battleground, but it failed.

He said that Washington did not take into account the real situation in the Afghanistan and chose a calender-based approach to withdraw troops from the country. 

He also blamed the then-president Ashraf Ghani for the disintegration of Afghanistan's security sector, saying his escape triggered the chaos in the Afghan capital.
