In a major win for LGBT workers and their allies, the US Supreme Court has ruled that employers who fire workers for being gay or transgender are breaking the country's civil rights laws. In a 6-3 decision the top court said federal law, which prohibits discrimination based on sex, should be understood to include sexual orientation. The outcome is expected to have a big impact for the estimated 8.1 million LGBT workers across the country because most states don't protect them from workplace discrimination. The Trump administration had changed course from the Obama administration, which supported LGBT workers in their discrimination claims under Title VII.
