United States begins sanctions on Taliban, freezes $9.5 billion worth of Afghanistan's assets

In a bid to curtail the influence of the Taliban the United States is resorting to the old script of sanctions and freezing of funds. As per reports the United States has frozen assets and cash worth over $9.5 billion that belong to the Afghan Central Bank. 

Bloomberg reports that Biden led govt in United States has stopped shipments of cash to the nation as it tries to keep a Taliban-led government from accessing the money, an administration official confirmed Tuesday.

Da Afghan Bank, the nation’s central bank has $9.5 billion in assets, a sizeable portion of which is in accounts with the New York Federal Reserve and U.S.-based financial institutions.

The US Treasury Department or State Department have not confirmed these developments.
