The University Grant Commission on Saturday issued guidelines for the
opening of universities and colleges after a gap of nearly 7 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While UGC said that universities are only allowed to have 50 percent of students, for now, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal assured that online and distance education will continue to be the preferred method.

As per the guidelines, only limited number of hostels will be opened with one student per room. As the centre furthers its plan of opening educational institutions, it has also consulted the state and Union territory governments about reopening universities and colleges outside containment zones.
