Kaavan, the world's loneliest elephant, has now been allowed to leave the zoo in Islamabad, to go live in better conditions and lead a better life.
He has spent over 35 years at the zoo and has finally been given medical approval to travel. According to animal welfare organisation Four Paws, he will most likely travel to Cambodia, where he will find both companionship and better conditions to live.
The Marghazar Zoo, where Kaavan lives, was in fact closed in May this year after the Pakistan High Court highlighted the abysmal conditions of the zoo and the increasing instances of negligence.
After losing his partner in 2012, Kaavan has been living in a tiny enclosure all alone. His rescue comes as a result of a worldwide campaign which began in 2016.
