A high level of dental hygiene ought to be maintained on a daily basis. There’s no denying its importance in keeping teeth and gums healthy. Neglecting oral health can lead to tooth decay, dental abscess or infected gums resulting in tooth or gum pain.
A toothache can be a source of great discomfort and make everyday tasks like eating, talking, sleeping or concentrating on any other work seem herculean. Mild discomfort, however, can easily be treated at home. Check out some effective home remedies that can help you bid adieu to this uneasy sensation.
Garlic
This common ingredient of Indian recipes is helpful in controlling toothache. It has anti-bacterial properties which can kill bacteria and also act as a pain reliever. Crush a garlic clove to create a paste and apply it to the affected area. Apart from this, you can also slowly chew on a clove of fresh garlic.
Clove
Clove is also an age-old remedy for toothache. Dab a small amount of clove oil onto a cotton ball and apply it to the affected area. Chewing or sucking on a single clove and allowing it to sit near the painful tooth may also help relieve pain. Alternatively, you can also prepare clove tea by adding 4-5 cloves to boiling water, for instant relief.
Salt water
Salt water rinse is one of the basic treatments for dental issues. It is a natural antibacterial agent and can reduce inflammation. All you need to do is add some salt to lukewarm water and use it as a mouth wash. Repeat this process 2-3 times a day for best results. It may also help remove any food particles or debris stuck in the teeth or gums.
Cold compress
Cold compress is commonly used as a pain reliever especially post-injury. It can also help you get rid of toothache. Wrap some ice in a towel and place this on the affected side of the face or jaw for some time as it helps constrict the blood vessels in the area.
Peppermint
Just like clove, peppermint can reduce toothache, inflammation and soothe sensitive gums. You can use peppermint oil or place a slightly hot peppermint tea bag on the tooth. Menthol, an active ingredient in peppermint, may also have a mild numbing effect on sensitive areas.
Do not ignore toothache for too long. If you experience pain even after trying these remedies, see your dentist immediately!
