The Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Olympics took place on Friday night in an empty stadium in Tokyo. With no spectators & a few officials in presence, teams marched in restricted numbers. The performers paid tribute to those who lost their lives due to the pandemic as the ceremony missed the big pomp and show which predecessors in the past had.

The Indian Contingent was led by MC Mary Kom and Hockey Captain Manpreet Singh. Just over 20 Indian athletes attended the ceremony owing to fear of contracting Covid-19. The ceremony marked the official start of the Games, which were postponed by a year due to the pandemic. Interestingly, protests raged around the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo right through the opening ceremony.
