After finishing last in previous Olympics in Rio, the Indian women's hockey team had a contrasting fortune in Tokyo but missed out on a Bronze medal. India lost to Great Britain 3-4 in the Bronze medal match but still had their best finish in Olympic history.

Rani Rampal’s team though brought the fight to the Rio Olympic champions. After trailing 2-0, India fought back with 3 goals in 6 minutes to go into the half-time with a 3-2 lead. India’s star drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur scored a brace, while Vandana Katariya found the net once.

Great Britain though scored 2 more goals and India couldn't match that to force a shoot-off. Never the less, the Indian women would take a lot of confidence from their spirited performance as they made the nation proud.
