World Heart Day is celebrated every year on the 29th of September. This year around, it falls in the middle of a global pandemic.
Doctors from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh are urging people to maintain a healthy lifestyle as Covid-19 could lead to two kinds of cardiac complications. The one which is acute occurs during the infection, while the other is chronic and sets in once the patient has recovered from Covid-19.
Thus doctors urge Covid-19 patients to be evaluated for both an underlying heart disease or the manifestation of a new one. This is especially true for elderly people with hypertension or chronic respiratory disease.
Experts also believe that engaging in activities like smoking and alcohol consumption could be on the rise with the growing psychological stress in the community, thus increasing the risk of heart disease.
