The headphones are completely redesigned with a new curvier aesthetic. However, they no longer fold like their predecessors.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the successor to the WH-1000XM4, and its sound quality and active noise cancellation are reported to be enhanced. The headphones are powered by the new QN1 noise-cancelling processor which promises improved performance across the board.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 uses Bluetooth 5.2 for communication and supports SBC, AAC, and LDAC Bluetooth codecs. There is also a simultaneous multipoint connection for up to two devices.

The headphones include new and updated 30mm dynamic drivers. Sony’s precise Voice Pickup technology uses four beamforming microphones and an AI-based noise reduction structure for superior noise isolation, while a newly developed wind noise reduction structure is claimed to minimise wind noise during calls.

It also has a combination of button and touch controls, with the right ear cup's touch-sensitive portion controlling playback and volume.

Active Noise Cancelling has always been a selling point of this headphone series, and the XM5’s improve on it with 8 active microphones and two processors.

Sony rates the XM5s for 30 hours of playback with ANC on, and 40 hours with ANC off. With a fast USB PD charger, a three-minute charge is claimed to give three hours of playback time.
