Samsung has offered its clearest indication yet of what to expect from its next generation of foldable smartphones. Ahead of Galaxy Unpacked later this month, Samsung Electronics President and CEO TM Roh has said the company's upcoming foldables will be thinner, lighter, stronger and more immersive, while also ushering in a new era of personalised AI experiences.
In an editorial published ahead of the launch event, Roh outlined Samsung's vision for the future of artificial intelligence and explained why foldable smartphones will play a central role in that strategy. According to him, as AI becomes increasingly capable of understanding users and acting on their behalf, device form factors will matter more than ever.
According to Roh, foldables are uniquely positioned to unlock richer AI experiences because they can transform from compact smartphones into larger displays that are better suited for multitasking and productivity. Samsung has spent years refining the category, and the company's next-generation devices are expected to continue that evolution with slimmer and lighter designs.
"As AI helps us with more at once, a screen that flexes and folds expands what is possible. This is what makes foldables special: they fold into your hand or open a larger stage. On this journey, Samsung has continued to make foldables thinner, lighter, stronger and more immersive," wrote Roh
Roh said Samsung believes artificial intelligence is moving beyond simply answering questions and is entering an "agentic" age, where it can proactively complete tasks while leaving the final decision in the user's hands. The company is building these experiences around devices that already know users best, while extending them across its broader ecosystem of smartphones, tablets, wearables, televisions and home appliances.
"AI no longer merely answers. It is entering an agentic age, taking action on our behalf while the person carries the final decision. But to act for someone, it must first know them. That is why it matters where AI meets people. The entry points are where AI understands a person and builds trust. The best AI experiences will come from the devices that know the user best," said Roh, in his blog post
Samsung also reiterated its commitment to an open ecosystem, saying collaboration with partners will help deliver the best AI experiences while ensuring they remain personalised and useful.
Privacy and security remain central to Samsung's AI ambitions. Roh said Samsung Knox will continue protecting both Galaxy devices and the data shared between them, allowing users to understand how AI works while keeping sensitive personal information on-device.
"Samsung Knox protects each Galaxy device and now the connections between them. As intelligence moves across devices, protecting what flows between them is crucial. The most personal data stays on the device so people can understand how AI is working and remain in control," wrote Roh
Samsung is expected to unveil three new foldables at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 in London. The lineup is widely expected to include the Galaxy Z Fold 8, also rumoured as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip 8. The event will be livestreamed in India from 6:30 PM IST.
