A close encounter with an asteroid is on the cards as Asteroid 2023 ME1 approaches Earth at an impressive velocity.

The Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) data indicates that today, June 26, is when this asteroid will make its closest pass to our planet.

Though the gap of 4.8 million kilometres may seem immense, in astronomical terms, it's merely a stone's throw away, especially given the considerable size of this asteroid.

Asteroid 2023 ME1's Supersonic Speed

When it comes to the speed of this near-Earth asteroid, the statistics are startling. The asteroid's current speed, as reported by NASA, stands at 43,685 kilometres per hour. That's significantly faster than even a hypersonic ballistic missile!

Understanding the Asteroid's Dimensions

NASA's asteroid news today revealed the estimated dimensions of the asteroid - a considerable 88 feet in width. While not large enough to earn the moniker "planet-killer," the size comparison to an aircraft gives us a fair understanding of its scale.

A Member of the Apollo Group

Asteroid 2023 ME1 belongs to the distinguished Apollo group of asteroids, defined as Earth-crossing asteroids with larger semi-major axes than Earth.

Named after the gargantuan 1862 Apollo asteroid discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s, these asteroids share some fascinating characteristics.

Despite not being a potential threat, the fact that another space rock will be passing Earth today, as warned by NASA, adds a layer of intrigue to the unfolding celestial event.
