Apple’s first foldable iPhone is finally here, and there’s plenty to talk about.
There’s the folding 7.6-inch display, the titanium construction, the ridiculously complicated hinge and the A20 Pro powering everything underneath.
But if you’re buying one in India, there’s another specification that immediately grabs your attention: ₹2,99,900.
Yep. Apple’s iPhone Duo starts at essentially ₹3 lakh for the 256GB variant in India. Move up the storage ladder and things get even crazier, with the 2TB version topping out at ₹4,49,900.
The Duo was never going to be cheap. This is Apple’s first foldable, after all, and it sits right at the top of the iPhone hierarchy.
But then you look at what the same phone costs elsewhere.
And suddenly, ₹2,99,900 becomes much harder to ignore.
In the US, Apple has priced the base iPhone Duo at $1,999. At current exchange rates, that works out to roughly ₹1.90 lakh.
India? ₹2,99,900.
That’s a difference of roughly ₹1.09 lakh between the two sticker prices.
Forget Apple Intelligence, someone needs to explain Apple Mathematics to us.
Now, simply converting the US price into rupees doesn’t tell the complete story. US prices are generally quoted before state and local sales taxes, which vary depending on where you buy the phone. India’s retail price, meanwhile, includes GST.
But even when you move away from the US, India continues to look expensive.
The iPhone Duo starts at AED 8,499 in the UAE, while Japan gets it for ¥364,800. At current exchange rates, those prices work out to roughly ₹2.20 lakh and ₹2.25 lakh respectively. Comparisons with other Asian markets including Thailand and Vietnam also put the Duo comfortably below its ₹2.99 lakh Indian sticker price.
The differences are large enough that the inevitable joke about flying abroad to buy your iPhone doesn’t sound quite as ridiculous this year.
Depending on where you travel, you could theoretically buy the phone overseas, turn the trip into a short holiday and still have quite a bit of that ₹1 lakh-plus gap to play with.
Of course, actually doing that is more complicated once flights, hotels, taxes, foreign-exchange charges and warranty considerations enter the equation.
But that’s not really the point.
The striking part is just how far apart the sticker prices have become.
You might be tempted to write the Duo off as an unusual first-generation product. Except Apple’s regular Pro iPhones tell a similar story.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 in India. In the US, the same model starts at $1,199, which converts to roughly ₹1.14 lakh.
The UAE price works out to around ₹1.32 lakh, while Japan is around ₹1.35 lakh.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max makes the difference equally obvious. It starts at ₹1,79,900 in India, compared with $1,299 in the US, or roughly ₹1.23 lakh at current exchange rates.
So this isn’t exclusively a foldable-iPhone problem.
Across Apple’s new premium lineup, Indian buyers are staring at considerably higher sticker prices than customers in several major international markets.
There isn’t one convenient villain here.
Taxes, duties, currency movements, logistics and Apple’s regional pricing strategy all affect what an iPhone eventually costs in different markets. The US comparison in particular needs context because Apple’s advertised American prices exclude local sales taxes.
That makes directly converting dollars into rupees imperfect.
But it doesn’t make the gap disappear.
The iPhone 18 Pro is roughly ₹50,000 more expensive in India than its converted US sticker price. With the iPhone Duo, that gap balloons to around ₹1.09 lakh.
And that’s what makes the Duo particularly difficult to swallow.
At $1,999, it is already an exceptionally expensive smartphone. At ₹2,99,900, it enters an entirely different universe.
