An image depicting a false explosion at the Pentagon circulated widely, triggering a brief but impactful dip in the financial markets on Monday. This incident further fueled discussions about the potential societal risks associated with generative artificial intelligence. Many suspected that the image was created using AI technology and was disseminated by multiple accounts. The Pentagon promptly refuted the claim, stating that there was no attack on their premises. Similarly, the Arlington, Virginia fire department clarified that no explosion or incident occurred near the Pentagon. The circulating image briefly affected the markets, with the S&P 500 experiencing a temporary decline of 0.29% before recovering. Although trading algorithms picked up on the false news, market analyst Pat O'Hare observed that the extent of the decline did not match the severity of the misinformation.
