The Taliban on Monday claimed that their fighters have "completely captured" Panjshir Valley, which was the last pocket of resistance in Afghanistan.
Panjshir was holding out agianst the Taliban since the group captured Kabul last month.
"With this victory, our country is completely taken out of the quagmire of war," Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement, according to the AFP news agency.
The Taliban control over Panjshir came after intense fighting with resistance forces led by Ahmad Massoud over the last few days.
The war over Panjshir province escalated on Friday night and the National Resistance Front said two of its senior leaders--Fahim Dashty, the front's spokesperson, and General Abdul Wudod Zara--were killed during the fighting with the Taliban.
On Sunday, Massoud had called for a ceasefire and negotiations with the Taliban.
Reports also claimed that Amrullah Saleh, the acting president of Afghanistan, has moved to a safe place after a helicopter attack on his house.
