It was literally blood, sweat and tears for the 22-time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal who came from a set down to beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini in the 2nd round of the US Open on Thursday.

The Spaniard beat the 35-year-old 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 after braving a horrid start and a terrifying nose injury that he suffered during the 4th set.Nadal who is looking to win his record extending 23rd Grand Slam had a freak incident that saw him get a bloody nose when his racket rebounded accidentally after hitting the court. A medical timeout was called as he received treatment on the court.

The gritty Nadal did not let the bloody injury come in the way of victory as he triumphed to reach the third round of the tournament where he will play Frenchman Richard Gasquet against whom he has an unbeaten lifetime record of 18-0.
