London, Aug 5 (AP) — Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey appeared in court on Tuesday, charged with five counts of rape and was subsequently granted conditional bail. The 32-year-old, who also faces one count of sexual assault, stood before the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. These alleged offenses, dating back to 2021-22, involve three different women.
The conditions of Partey's bail stipulate that he must avoid any contact with the women involved and keep police informed of any permanent residence changes or international travel plans.
Now a free agent following the expiration of his Arsenal contract in June, Partey is reportedly on the verge of joining Spanish club Villarreal.
“I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now,” remarked Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring.
Partey, dressed in a dark zip-up sweater and carrying a suit jacket, stood with his arms behind his back in the courtroom dock.
His legal representative, Jenny Wiltshire, stated that he “denies all the charges against him” and is eager for the chance to "clear his name".
The investigation began in February 2022 when police received their initial report concerning the alleged rape, with Partey being formally charged on July 4, shortly after his Arsenal contract ended.
He is scheduled to make his next court appearance at the Old Bailey on September 2. (AP) DDV
