Madrid, Oct 8 (PTI) Thiago Alcantara, a prominent figure in Spanish football, has been appointed as a Laureus ambassador.

The former Spain international and Champions League victor has assumed this role shortly after rejoining FC Barcelona as an assistant coach under Hansi Flick.

The announcement was made during Thiago’s engagement with Fútbol Más, a Laureus-supported 'legacy' initiative in Madrid that leverages football to foster mental wellness, inclusivity, and leadership skills among the youth.

Thiago, capped 46 times for Spain, participated in activities with local children aimed at enhancing confidence and teamwork.

The 34-year-old boasts a remarkable playing career. After emerging from Barcelona’s renowned youth academy, he secured four La Liga titles and was a key player in the team that clinched the Champions League in 2011 with Pep Guardiola at the helm.

His 2013 transfer to Bayern Munich heralded further triumphs, including seven Bundesliga titles and another Champions League win in 2020. A stint at Liverpool saw him make 68 appearances and win an additional three trophies.

Fútbol Más is active in various countries worldwide, influencing communities throughout Latin America, Africa, and Europe.

This initiative is part of a broader legacy project following the 2024 and 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, with the City and Community of Madrid pledging support for Laureus Sport for Good programs in the area.

Thiago’s association with Laureus began at the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, where he joined other athletes and Academy Members in celebrating the unifying power of sport.

Earlier this year, he participated in the Alfred Dunhill Padel Classic, teaming up with fellow Laureus supporters in a distinctive fundraising event that blended sport, style, and philanthropy.

Thiago’s Alcantara Family Foundation, based in Barcelona, is dedicated to fostering personal growth and social inclusion through sport.

Thiago expressed: "The Laureus Awards in Madrid were unforgettable—a celebration of sport and its power to unite people. What impressed me most was the commitment to leave a legacy in the city by supporting programs like Fútbol Más that are transforming lives. Today, I witnessed that legacy in action.

"These kids are gaining life skills through football—confidence, respect, teamwork—and it’s truly inspiring. I’ve been fortunate to live my dream through football, and now I want to help others do the same. Becoming a Laureus Ambassador is a proud moment for me, and I’m excited to be part of this movement."
