New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has called in former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan for questioning on Thursday as part of an investigation into an illegal betting app-linked money laundering case, sources revealed. The federal probe agency intends to record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), focusing on an "illegal" betting app known as 1xBet, sources added.
The 39-year-old ex-India cricketer is reported to have associations with the app through certain endorsements, which the ED seeks to probe during their questioning. The agency is currently investigating several cases involving illegal betting apps, accused of defrauding numerous individuals and investors of crores of rupees or evading significant tax payments.
Last month, former cricketer Suresh Raina was also questioned by the federal agency in relation to this matter. The Union government has recently banned real-money online gaming by enacting new legislation.
