New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI): The Supreme Court recently overturned the bail granted to Sushil Kumar, the Olympic medalist, in connection with the murder case involving Sagar Dhankar, a former junior national wrestling champion. This incident took place at the Chhatrasal Stadium, located in the nation's capital. Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra presided over the bench that dismissed the previous decision made by the Delhi High Court on March 4 granting Kumar bail. The court has instructed Kumar to surrender himself within a week. This Supreme Court ruling was in response to an appeal by Ashok Dhankar, the father of the victim, who contested the Delhi High Court's decision. Kumar faces allegations of a fatal assault on Sagar Dhankar in May 2021, allegedly due to a property dispute. During the altercation, two of Dhankar's friends sustained injuries as well. The postmortem report indicated that the victim succumbed to cerebral damage caused by a blunt object. Kumar was apprehended in May 2021 and was later granted a brief interim bail for knee surgery on July 19, 2023. The trial court framed several charges against Kumar in October 2022, encompassing offenses such as murder, criminal conspiracy, intimidation, and rioting with a deadly weapon, in addition to charges under the Arms Act, among others. The court noted that Sagar Dhankar was forcefully brought to the stadium, where he was brutally attacked by multiple individuals armed with baseball and hockey sticks.
