India finished day 1 of Asian Games 2023 with a total of 5 medals (3 silver and 2 bronze) but there were some disciplines which disappointed.

Riding on a Sunil Chhetri goal, the Indian men's football team held Myanmar to a 1-1 draw and progressed to the round of 16 on Sunday.

However, the Indian men's team missed out on an Asian Games bronze medal in table tennis after a second-string South Korea blanked them 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

The impressive run of star swimmer Srihari Nataraj and the Indian women's team also ended with 6th and 7th-place finishes in the finals of men's 100m backstroke and 4x100m freestyle relay respectively.

Indian Grandmaster Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, the third-highest-ranked player in the field, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan's IM Kazybek Nogerbek in the second round of the men's individual event.

In the women's event, India's top players, Koneru Humpy and D Harika, started well and secured wins in the first two rounds.
