London, July 17 (AP) Canada forward Olivia Smith has made history by becoming the first women's soccer player to be signed for a staggering one million pounds ($1.34 million).

Arsenal secured Smith from Liverpool on Thursday, reportedly for this world-record fee.

This amount surpasses the previous record of 900,000 pounds ($1.1 million) paid by Chelsea to acquire Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave in January, marking a new milestone in women's soccer.

“She's one of the most talented young players in the game and has huge potential for further development here at the club,” said Clare Wheatley, Arsenal's director of women's football.

Smith's transfer underscores the escalating investment in women's soccer, with transfer records being shattered frequently of late.

Last year, Zambia striker Rachael Kundananji's move to Bay FC from Madrid CFF set a record at $788,000, a figure swiftly eclipsed by Girma's move to Chelsea. (AP)
