Ahmedabad, Aug 25 (PTI) Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu showcased her extraordinary talent by clinching a gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships with a record-setting performance on Monday.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist achieved a total lift of 193kg (84kg in the snatch and 109kg in the clean and jerk), establishing new records for the Commonwealth Championships in these categories, as well as in the total lift, to top the women's 48kg category podium.

Chanu, who returned to international competition after a year off due to an injury, exhibited occasional signs of rustiness, successfully completing only three of her six attempts. She struggled with her initial snatch attempt of 84kg due to apparent discomfort in her right knee but managed to conquer that weight on her second try. Her third attempt at 89kg was unsuccessful.

Lacking real challengers, Chanu was essentially in a contest with herself. She began with a 105kg lift in the clean and jerk, increased it to 109kg, but could not finish her final attempt at 113kg.

Irene Henry from Malaysia, with a total lift of 161kg (73kg in the snatch and 88kg in the clean and jerk), earned the silver medal, while Wales' Nikole Roberts secured the bronze with a total of 150kg (70kg+80kg).

The competition marked Chanu's return to the 48kg weight class, the category in which she previously achieved a world championship title and two Commonwealth Games medals, but had not competed in since 2018.

In the junior category, Soumya Dalvi claimed the gold medal.
