London, Sep 2 (AP) Manchester City has secured the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, following the sale of their veteran goalkeeper Ederson Moraes to Fenerbahce on Tuesday. This move marks a significant shift for the once-dominant Premier League side, as Donnarumma's strengths differ from City's usual style under Pep Guardiola.

The 26-year-old Donnarumma, considered one of the finest shot-stoppers globally, played an instrumental role in PSG's successful Champions League campaign last season. However, the arrival of Lucas Chevalier from Lille saw him labeled as redundant at the French club.

Despite his less-accomplished ability to distribute the ball from the back — a crucial skill for goalkeepers under Guardiola's tutelage — City sees potential in Donnarumma. Ederson, known for his exceptional composure and ability to initiate attacks with his precise, long passes, had set a new standard in English football. The Brazilian collected seven assists in the Premier League, surpassing any other goalkeeper by two.

Donnarumma's signing on a five-year contract indicates City's commitment to his future prospects. The Italy international expressed his excitement and pride, stating, “This is a club every player in world football would love to join. I have admired watching Manchester City for many years — so to now be able to play for the club is a huge honor and a privilege.”

While this acquisition may seem unusual for Guardiola's system, Donnarumma brings tremendous leadership and a dominant presence in front of the goal. Hailed as arguably Europe's top goalkeeper last season for his performances in the Champions League knockout stages, Donnarumma will replace Ederson, whose contract had only a year left with PSG unwilling to lose him for free next summer.

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, emphasized Donnarumma’s experience and success, noting he understands “what is required to achieve success on a sustained level.”

Ederson's departure marks the end of an era, as his tenure from 2017 brought 18 trophies to City. Expressing his sentiments, the 31-year-old said, “I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together.” Viana lauded Ederson for his “skills and bravery,” integral to City's possession-based style.

The transitions extend beyond the goalkeeping position for City. This transfer window saw Kyle Walker move to Burnley permanently, Jack Grealish join Everton on loan, and Manuel Akanji sign for Inter Milan. These changes come as City continues the overhaul of its squad, moving on from players who were vital during their Champions League-winning run in 2023 but are considered past their peak.

James Trafford, acquired from Burnley during the offseason, began the season as City's primary goalkeeper. However, he is expected to make way for Donnarumma soon.

Announced quickly after the closing of the transfer window in England late Monday, the deals for Donnarumma and Ederson highlight the dynamics of modern transfers, with Turkey’s market still open.
