New York, Sep 4 (AP) When a fan made an attempt to seize Jannik Sinner's bag following a match at the U.S. Open, the concern for the reigning champion extended beyond just his tennis gear.
"I checked straightaway if he took something, because I don't have only rackets there," Sinner remarked on Wednesday night after advancing to the semifinals at Flushing Meadows.
"I have my phone. I have my wallet." The incident occurred post his earlier victory in the fourth round on Monday night when a spectator attempted to access Sinner's bag as the 24-year-old approached the stands to distribute a towel and pose for a photo. A vigilant security staff member swiftly intervened, preventing the fan from further tampering, allowing Sinner to exit the crowd unscathed.
Sinner expressed that he had never encountered such an incident before.
"But I feel like the security is doing a great job. Especially on court, there is plenty of security," Sinner noted. "I believe especially the big tournaments, they make an amazing job to (make us) feel safe. So even if new things happen like this, they make a great job."
"It's all fine." Sinner triumphed over fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti with scores of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday. He is set to return to Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday to face No. 25 Felix Auger-Aliassime. (AP)
