He had just returned from injury but sadly, Kane Williamson is out after just 1 game.

In a major blow to New Zealand, scans confirmed that Williamson suffered a fracture on his left thumb. He retired hurt at 78 in his side's last ODI World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh after being hit on the thumb by a throw by a fielder.

Tom Blundell will travel to India as his replacement. However, Williamson will remain with the squad with the aim of being available for the back end of the pool matches next month.

Williamson was out due to injury for a few months after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the first game of IPL 2023 in March. He had missed New Zealand’s first two matches in this World Cup.
