New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI) – Gautam Gambhir, India's head coach, is advocating for the nation's Test specialists to participate in the Ranji Trophy, representing their respective states. This comes ahead of the upcoming South Africa series. Gambhir believes match practice is irreplaceable and more beneficial than skill-set training at Bengaluru’s Centre of Excellence.

The Indian head coach is acutely aware of the tight schedule, as India's T20 contingent will finish their last match against Australia in Brisbane on November 9, with the first Test against South Africa commencing merely five days later, on November 14, in Kolkata.

"It’s sometimes challenging, but professionalism demands making the most of every available day," Gambhir explained. "With the frequent shifts between formats – from one-day to T20 and then back to Test cricket within a span of four days – it’s crucial for the players solely involved in Test cricket to gain match experience through domestic competitions."

Instead of just heading to the NCA, Gambhir emphasizes the importance of participating in domestic matches to ensure readiness for Test matches. Among those not traveling to Australia, batter Sai Sudharsan, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, reserve batter Devdutt Padikkal, and reserve keeper Narayan Jagadeesan are expected to feature in several matches, while Rishabh Pant, recovering from an injury, is anticipated to appear in the second-round game in Delhi.

Additionally, players like Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, and KL Rahul are also expected to be available post the ODIs.

Citing Rahul, Sudharsan, Jurel, and Devdutt Padikkal, Gambhir praised their preparations for the West Indies series by featuring in India A games against Australia A. Rahul had also played for India A against England Lions.

"Playing all three formats presents challenges, but our players' preparation for the series has been commendable, particularly through India A games against Australia," Gambhir noted.

Gambhir also emphasized the imperative of participating in the Ranji Trophy in the lead-up to the South Africa series. Additionally, four-day games against South Africa A will be part of their preparation.

"Engaging in the Ranji Trophy prior to the South Africa series is crucial. This team has prepared exceptionally well, and such efforts reflect in their performances," Gambhir concluded.
