Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel endured a torrid return to his former club Mainz on Saturday as his team squandered the lead and lost 3-1.

With Borussia Dortmund thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Bayern also lost the lead in the title race with only 5 games left to be played this season.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring with his seventh league goal of the season when he headed in Joao Cancelo’s cross in the 29th minute and a routine win for Tuchel's side looked likely.

But, Mainz improved after the break and Ludovic Ajorque equalised in the 65th when Bayern’s defence was unable to clear following a free kick.

Leandro Barreiro put Mainz in front in the 73rd, and six minutes later Spanish left-back Aaron Martin marked his 26th birthday by scoring Mainz’s third.

Borussia Dortmund, who now have a 1-point lead at the top, could break Bayern Munich's dominance in the Bundesliga by breaking their 10-year title-winning streak this time.
