The Japanese football team failed to top their surprise win against Germany as the Samurai Blues fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Costa Rica who helped the fans forget their 7-0 loss against Spain earlier in the tournament.

Keysher Fuller's fantastic 81st-minute strike helped Los Ticos get their first win in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in a game where the opponents were dominating them. The match-winning shot was Costa Rica's only shot on target in the whole game as well.

Costa Rica's win opens up the Group E standings with three teams on 3 points before table toppers Spain takes on Germany later in the day.
