England clinched a thrilling victory to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, triumphing over Nigeria in a nail-biting penalty shootout.

Despite an initial miss from England's first penalty-taker Georgia Stanway, Nigeria faltered in their subsequent two attempts. The resilience of the European champions shone through as they clinched their place in the tournament's last eight with a triumphant kick from Chloe Kelly.

The victory was earned after enduring an arduous battle that included playing with 10 players. In a moment of frustration, Lauren James stamped on Michelle Alozie's back during the 87th minute, resulting in a red card after a thorough video assistant referee (VAR) examination.

The English team faced an intense challenge but emerged victorious, setting their sights on a quarter-final match against either Colombia or Jamaica.
