Holder Manchester City began their Champions League campaign with a bang as they defeated the Serbian football club Crvena Zvezda 3-1 on a thrilling opening night.

Julian Alvarez took all the limelight as he scored twice for the Citizens in the 47th and 60th minute after CVZ's Osman Bukari had found the net in the 45th minute. Rodri too got a goal in the 73rd minute as Manchester City who are placed in the G group won their first Group game.

In the same group RB Leipzig also beat Swiss Young Boys 3-1 with Mohd Simakan, Xaver Schlager and Benjamin Sesko getting on the scoresheet for the visitors at the Wankdorf stadium.

In Group F, Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi scored for the French club Paris Saint Germain as they defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0. In another game of the same group, Newcastle, who returned to the competition after 10 years, played a stalemate against AC Milan at San Siro.

While Lazio restricted Atletico de Madrid to a 1-1 draw in Group E, Feyenoord handed 9-man Celtic a heartbreaking 2-0 defeat with Calvin Stengs and Alireza Jahanbaksh scoring for the Dutch club in the same group.

In Group H, Barcelona thrashed Antwerp as they registered a 5-0 win against the Belgian club.
A ruthless display by Barca spoiled group debutants' first outing. While Joao Felix got 2 on board, Robert Lewandowski achieved a special feat with his goal in the 19th minute. He has now scored 100 goals in UEFA Club Competitions and has now become only the 3rd player to do so after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Apart from the Polish star, Jelle Bataille's own goal and Gavi's stunner helped Xavi's men register a dominant win.

In the same group, Galeno's brace and Mehdi Taremi's goal helped Porto defeat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1.
