Shillong, Aug 18 (PTI) In a highly-anticipated clash, defending champions NorthEast United FC are set to battle it out against hosts Shillong Lajong FC in the first semifinal of the Durand Cup. This encounter, a repeat of the 2024 final, will take place on Tuesday. The winner of this match will face either East Bengal or Diamond Harbour FC in the final to be held on August 23 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

NorthEast United's campaign this year has been impressive, with the team besting Shillong Lajong 2-1 in the group stages before cruising to a convincing 4-0 victory against Bodoland FC in the quarterfinals. Their strength clearly lies in their striking force led by Moroccan Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who is the tournament’s top scorer, alongside Jithin MS and Lalrinzuala. Captain Michel Zabaco remains confident yet grounded, saying, “We have given our 100 per cent and we will continue to do the same tomorrow (Tuesday). Pressure is always there, but we know how to manage it.”

On the other hand, Shillong Lajong have showcased their resilience throughout the tournament. The Red Dragons emerged as runners-up in Group E behind NEUFC and then displayed a thrilling performance in the quarters by overturning a deficit to edge out Indian Navy FT 2-1. The team relied on key contributions from Damaitphang Lyngdoh and Everbrightson Sana. Lajong’s offensive prowess is concentrated in the trio of Phrangki Buam, Sana, and Figo Syndai, who have scored nine of the team's 12 goals. Coach Thapa remarked on his team’s bolstered confidence this year, saying, “We have lost to them twice, but our approach will be different in tomorrow’s match. It will be a tough contest.”

Central to Lajong’s strategy will be Spaniards Andy Rodriguez and Chema Nunez, who are tasked with unsettling NEUFC’s play. Additionally, the pressing tactics led by Gladdy Kharbuli and Treimiki Lamurong could potentially disrupt the champions. NorthEast coach Juan Pedro Benali acknowledges the challenge ahead, saying, “Shillong Lajong are a much better team this year. It’s always tough to play against them, and tomorrow won’t be any different.”
