Cricket West Indies (CWI) has made a groundbreaking commitment to ensure gender pay equity within its ranks, following the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the West Indies Players Association (WIPA). Announced on Friday, this MoU, effective from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2027, encapsulates comprehensive agreements regarding player salaries and the modernization of terms and conditions throughout the West Indies cricket infrastructure.
Central to this agreement is the ambition to establish equal pay for players in several key areas, including international and regional match fees, captain allowances, team prize money, and individual award compensation by October 1, 2027. This initiative places the West Indies alongside other cricketing nations like India, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and England, which have recently taken strides towards eliminating pay disparities between male and female players.
Moreover, this move comes in the wake of the International Cricket Council (ICC) setting a precedent last year for prize money equality at its tournaments, signaling a broader shift towards gender parity in sports. Kishore Shallow, President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), heralded the signing as a landmark moment for cricket in the region, emphasizing its role in fostering a more equitable and forward-looking sporting environment.
Highlighting the efforts towards gender equality, Shallow pointed to significant improvements made in the travel and accommodation policies for the West Indies Senior Women’s team, ensuring parity with the men's team standards. These changes, including business-class travel on long-haul flights and single-room accommodations during international assignments, underscore CWI's dedication to creating a balanced and fair ecosystem for all its athletes.
