Piyush Chawla, the celebrated leg-spinner who was instrumental in India's World Cup victories in 2007 and 2011, has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket. The 36-year-old took to Instagram to share the decision, marking the end of a distinguished career that spanned over two decades.
Chawla's legacy includes more than 1000 wickets in professional cricket, stemming from a career that saw him don the Indian jersey in 3 Tests, 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 7 T20 Internationals (T20Is), capturing 43 wickets in international play. He made his Test debut as a teenager in March 2006 against England, becoming India's second youngest debutant in the format at 17 years and 75 days, following only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Reflecting on his illustrious journey, Chawla expressed gratitude for being part of India's victorious squads in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. "These memories will forever remain etched in my heart," Chawla wrote, emphasizing the pride and joy of representing India at the highest level.
Beyond international cricket, Chawla was a notable presence in the Indian Premier League (IPL), amassing 192 wickets across a franchise career with Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians, his final stint being with the latter from 2022 to 2024. He paid tribute to the franchises and his coaches, Shri K.K. Gautam and the late Shri Pankaj Saraswat, for shaping his career.
His last competitive outing came for Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in November 2024, where he delivered a stellar performance with figures of 4/12 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.
As he steps away from the crease, Chawla remains committed to the game, indicating that the spirit and lessons learned from cricket will guide him on his forthcoming journey. "Though I step away, cricket will always live within me," Chawla concluded, leaving the door open for future contributions to the sport.
