In order to take a global role in the franchise, Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as the head coach of Mumbai Indians on Wednesday.

He will now oversee the coaching and scouting of all three teams of Mumbai Indians. Overall, the Mumbai-based franchise has three teams -- Mumbai Indians in IPL, MI Emirates in the ILT20, and MI Cape Town in SA20.

The streamlining of the top roles in the coaching staff came after MI owners bought the two new teams.

Jayawardene was the head coach of Mumbai Indians since the 2017 edition and helped the team clinch three IPL titles.
