In a display of exceptional bowling prowess, R Ashwin, the world's top-ranked bowler, proved too formidable for the ill-equipped West Indies batting line-up. His second five-wicket haul of the game paved the way for India's resounding innings and 141-run victory in the opening Test.

Following India's declaration of their first innings at 421 for five, the Caribbean batsmen were expected to put up an improved display with the bat. However, they struggled to rise to the challenge, collapsing to a lowly 130-all out in just 50 overs, leading to a conclusive three-day finish.

Ashwin, who had already achieved his 33rd five-wicket haul in the first innings, delivered an outstanding performance with figures of seven for 71 in 21.3 overs in the second innings. These were his best bowling figures in an overseas Test match, further solidifying his reputation as a world-class bowler. His match haul of 12/131 is also the third best for an Indian in an away Test.

The outcome of the match was all but certain after the West Indies had been dismissed for 150 on the opening day, setting the stage for India's commanding victory.

India's triumph was also fueled by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made a remarkable debut with a sublime knock of 171. Additionally, captain Virat Kohli contributed 76 runs from 182 balls, although his innings was not as fluent as usual, requiring considerable effort to accumulate runs and surviving two dropped catches along the way.

The focus now shifts to the second and final Test, scheduled to commence in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on July 20. India, who have maintained an unbeaten Test record against West Indies since 2002, will be aiming for a clean sweep to gather crucial points in the World Test Championship.
