The writing was on the wall and it did come true on Wednesday. Gautam Gambhir has been officially appointed as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team.
It was a mere formality as Gauti was the frontrunner for the top job and his appointment didn't come as a surprise for any fan or cricket expert.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah made the announcement on his official X account and welcomed Gambhir on board.
'Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward,' Jay Shah wrote.
Gambhir had earlier said that he would be honoured to coach Team India but had reportedly made two demands. One, that he will have his own support staff and second, that there should be separate teams for white ball and red ball cricket. Both of which were accepted by the BCCI.
Gambhir succeeds Rahul Dravid, whose tenure as the India head coach ended with the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.
The 42-year-old was appointed as the mentor of IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders just last year and guided KKR to winning the tournament in his very first stint.
However, he will have to step down from that role now and Gambhir was even spotted in Kolkata recently where he reportedly shot a farewell video for KKR fans.
His stint as India head coach starts from the Sri Lanka series in July and fans will hope that it's the start of another glorious chapter in Indian cricket.
