The Ashes 2023 is coming to an end but even on the last day of the 5-match Test series, there was controversy revolving around a catch attempted by Ben Stokes involving Steve Smith.
The incident unfolded during the final over before lunch. As Steve Smith aimed to defend a delivery by Moeen Ali, the ball unexpectedly bounced higher than expected, brushing the glove. At leg slip, Ben Stokes reacted swiftly, leaping into the air and managing to catch the ball with his right hand. However, in the midst of his celebratory movements, the ball slipped out of Stokes' grip as his hand accidentally collided with his right knee.
The England captain was unsure of whether he had retained full control of the catch. Consequently, the on-field umpire, Joel Wilson, gave a not-out decision. Despite this, the English captain decided to refer the decision to the third umpire, Nitin Menon. Upon review, Menon upheld the on-field call, concluding that Stokes had never been in complete control of the ball during the catch attempt.
