Australian batter Matt Renshaw's return to Test cricket after a gap of nearly 5 years, didn't quite go as planned after he tested positive for Covid on the first day of the Sydney Test.

Renshaw reported feeling unwell moments before the toss and subsequently returned a positive result on a Rapid Antigen Test.

The 26-year-old will continue to play the New Year's Test while keeping his distance from other players. Peter Handscomb, meanwhile, has been called up as a Covid substitute in case a replacement is needed during the course of the game.
