With England cutting down Australia’s Ashes 2023 lead in half with their win at Leeds, captain Ben Stokes has made a new record in Test cricket, going past Indian legend MS Dhoni.
Stokes broke Dhoni’s record for most wins as captain while chasing a target of over 250 runs in Tests.
While the former Indian captain had achieved this feat 4 times, England’s win at Headingley took Stokes’ tally to 5.
West Indies legend Brian Lara & former Australian captain Ricky Ponting occupy the third spot on the list, with 3 such victories.
Speaking after his side’s 3-wicket victory, which saw them chase down 251 in another closely-fought encounter at Leeds, Stokes said the Three Lions are ‘over the moon’ with the victory.
The 32-year-old stated, “I think if you look at the first two games in terms of how tight they were, getting over the line in another tie game can sort of, I don't know mentally can sort of health, knowing that you know, another close game but we've got over the line in this one. Because the first two didn't go our way. So you sort of, you know, flip it around and if we didn't win this one, but it was tight again, you sort of say like it's just not meant to be. But yes, like, obviously we are over the moon that we've won this one. But yes, it's just the start of what we know we need to do.”
