Malappuram (Kerala), Nov 3 (PTI): In an exciting development for sports enthusiasts in Kerala, Sports Minister V Abdurahiman announced on Monday that the Argentine football team, led by the iconic Lionel Messi, is set to play a match in the state next March.
Speaking at the Sports Vision 2031 event organized by the Kerala government, the minister revealed, "We received a confirmation email from the Argentina team two days ago stating they will visit in March, and an official announcement will follow soon."
Abdurahiman confirmed that all necessary preparations for hosting the team have been completed.
Initially, the government had planned to host the South American giants at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi this month. "Unfortunately, despite our expectations to finish the stadium facilities in Kochi, some unavoidable delays meant we couldn't secure the venue approval in time," the minister said.
He emphasized that schedule changes for international matches are not unusual and shouldn't be seen as successes or failures. "Our effort to bring such a significant football event to Kerala is noteworthy in itself," Abdurahiman added.
As part of a broader initiative to boost the sports economy, the Kerala government plans to organize various international sports events. "Football and cricket have evolved into significant sectors, creating employment for millions. We aim to actively engage in this rapidly growing sports economy," the minister stated.
Initially, both the Sports Department and sponsors announced a match in Kochi against a top international team. However, the Argentine team’s recently released schedule for November did not include a match in Kochi.
