Equity benchmarks pared morning gains to end on a flat note on Tuesday as banking and pharma stocks witnessed heavy sell-off.
The Sensex closed 8 points in the red at 37,973 and the Nifty ended the trade at 11,222.
UPL, ONGC, IndusInd Bank, Powergrid and Axis Bank were the top five Nifty losers. Whereas Hindalco, Ultratech Cements, Hero Moto Corp, Titan and TCS were the top gainers.
Asian markets were mixed, while almost all European bourses were in the red.
The rupee depreciated 7 paise to settle at 73.86 against the US dollar.
