The Supreme Court on Thursday asked whether the sedition law was still necessary in the country?
"The sedition Law is a colonial law. Do we still need the law in our country after 75 years of Independence," Chief Justice NV Ramanna questioned.
The top court has agreed to examine the constitutional validity of the sedition law and has sought Centre's response.
The Supreme Court's remarks came on a plea by a former Army officer which has sought striking down of sedition law.
"The dispute is it is a colonial law, the very same law was used by the British to silence Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak," the chief justice observed
