Samsung has begun to produce 16GB LPDDR5 mobile RAM chips, which are being billed as the first to ever be made using extreme ultraviolet lithography. The process uses lasers and photosensitive chemicals to etch silicon, and reportedly clears a "major developmental hurdle" in scaling RAM, and could open up the industry to even larger RAM chips. The 6.4Gbps of bandwidth on the new chips is around 16% faster that what was offered on 12GB chips, despite the 16GB chips being 30% slimmer, freeing up space for other mobile components. While Samsung is pitching the new memory as ideal for flagship level smartphones, it also hopes to bring them to more in-car infotainment systems.
