A shock move to local rivals Manchester City had also been reported earlier on Friday, however the Premier League champions ended interest in the 36-year-old.
The Portugal star moved from Sporting Lisbon to Old Trafford in 2003, and scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for the Red Devils, before his record-breaking move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2009.
During his time with Sir Alex Ferguson's United, Ronaldo won 9 trophies, including 3 Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
