An increasing number of cancer cases in the US are associated with a poor diet, according to a new study published in the JNCI Cancer Spectrum. An estimated 80,110 new cancer cases among adults aged 20 and older in 2015 were attributable simply to eating a poor diet. For the study, several dietary factors were analysed by the researchers including consumption of whole grains and dairy products and a high intake of processed meat. The largest cancer burden in the US was linked to a low consumption of whole grains. According to the study, colon and rectal cancers had the highest number of diet-related cases. The study suggests that nutritional policies are required to address the cancer burden.
