Plant-based diets are crucial to halt the damage done to the natural world, according to a new report by the Chatham House thinktank.
The report, backed by the United Nations Environment Programme states that the 'global food system is the biggest driver of destruction of the natural world'.
Switching to a plant diet removes the pressure to clear more land and thus damage wildlife. Once the global food system, which causes approximately 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions, is fixed, the fight to tackle the climate crisis will be easier.
The report stated that the current food system is like a 'double-edged sword'- It does provide cheap food but fails to take into account the impact on our health and the environment.
