Mysterious, pink glacial ice has appeared in the Alps, prompting scientists in Italy to investigate it. It is caused by algae of the species Ancylonela nordenskioeldii,
that enhances the effects of climate change. According to scientists at the National Research Council, the pink snow on parts of the Presena glacier is caused by the same plant that was earlier found in Greenland. While it is not considered dangerous, it's a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer and spring months. Usually, ice reflects 80% of the sun on its surface. However, the presence of algae makes it darker and makes the ice melt more quickly as it begins to absorb heat.
