A day after income tax officers raided its office over alleged tax evasion, NewsClick issued a statement on Saturday , stating it is not the first time the organisation has been targeted by the government.

In the statement signed by editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha, the company has said the offices of NewsClick, as well as the residences of people associated with it were raided by the Enforcement Directorate earlier this year.

It was informed that NewsClick has cooperated with the investigations and handed over all the documents they have asked for from time to time.

Purkayastha said in the statement that raids were conducted over some false and unfounded allegations being investigated by the ED and the Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing.

Purkayastha alleged that these investigations by various agencies are attempts to stifle  independent journalism of media organisations - including NewsClick.
